The Philosophy

The Coop is an original chicken coop that has been transformed into a
superior recording environment. We hear over and over that the cornerstone to our success is the "Brown Sound". We create this unique sound through the combination of a proper acoustical environment and the richness of RADAR 24-bit HDR, which is the most analogue-sounding digital recorder in the world. Artists have the added benefit of being able to track independently or as a group "live-off-the-floor." One of the selling points of The Coop is that we offer ten separate sounding rooms, as well as various reflections to create anorganic, rich sound!

Something to crow about ...

Set in rural Alberta (Brownfield, just north of Coronation), The Coop maintains the importance of an open, limitless imagination with no boundaries to the artist. You will find the peace and relaxation to work at your own pace, with (in most cases) 24-hour accessibility to the studio. You may choose to record your project in one massive session, or do it on weekends when you have the time. We are as flexible as you need us to be. It's the next best thing to owning your own studio with an engineer!

Birds of a feather ...

If you are a songwriter or singer without a band and need a little guidance, we also have musicians and producers at your beck and call. Musician and producer rates will apply, and vary according to length of tenure and availability. We can also produce jingles, ads or karaoke tracks for the same low hourly rates.

The Gear

The Coop has become one of the leading Studios in Alberta with the recent upgrade of its recording equipment to the RADAR 24.

RADAR 24 is the audio recorder of choice for some of the most respected and successful producers, artists, engineers and studios around the world including: Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis(Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey, Sting etc.), Daniel Lanois, U2, Cherokee Studios L.A., Stone Temple Pilots, Rudy Van Gelder, Millennia's John La Grou, Banff Centre ... the list goes on.

RADAR 24 has been nominated by the panel of the 17th annual Technical
Excellence & Creativity Awards organization. In 1999 RADAR iZ Technology won this prestigious award for technical excellence for RADAR II.

The Organic Experience The Coop has recorded notable acts such as; Wide Mouth Mason's independent release "The Nazarene", McCuaig's self-titled debut, and "Tales from the Shroom room," and Carson Cole's "Thermostat" to name a few. We have done projects ranging from heavy alternative rock and pop to country, cowboy poetry and even gospel.

The Coop has 10 different sound chambers of various sizes and sounds,as well as different atmospheres amid mood lighting and rustic comfort. You'll find a drum room, keyboard room, sitting room, day beds for napping, vending machines and a kitchenette for making snacks.

There is a huge assortment of musical instruments available: guitar and bass amps, bintage keyboards, shakers, washboard, jew harp, harmonicas, accordion, bongos, percussions, mandolin - even drumsticks.

We run RADAR 24 track and also have additional computer recording capabilities, computer editing (Cakewalk, Qbase, Sound Forge plug-in etc ... ), midi interfacing through a Layla 24 multiport interface with light pipe, as well as analog TASCAM 16 track, and can run all three recorders
simultaneously.

The Coop is a practical, down-to-earth, organic studio with many natural
sound environments. We are also building a bale house and natural reverb chambers.

Our country location is secluded and quiet, so you can cackle as loud as you want! Smoke, drink, scratch, peck - we believe that if you are comfortable and inspired, you get the right takes accompanied by good feel, which helps you create a great recording.

Accommodations adjacent to the studio are available upon request, for charges so nominal they're practically chicken feed.
